BUILD YOUR OWN CRANKIE WORKSHOP Create your own storytelling apparatus! In this workshop, multi-talented artist and expert crankie maker Debra Lyn Neufeld will guide you through each step to complete your own CRANKIE! You just bring a song, story, or poem that you want to see come to life! What is a Crankie? A crankie, also known as a moving panorama or crank scroll, is a simple, captivating storytelling device that consists of a long, illustrated scroll of paper or fabric wound around two parallel spools or dowels and housed in a decorative box or frame. As a storyteller manually turns a crank handle attached to one of the spools, the continuous artwork slowly passes across a viewing screen creating a moving, panoramic scene that unfolds before the audience. Historically popular in the 19th century and now enjoying a resurgence in folk arts and puppet theater, crankies often feature sung or spoken narration that synchronizes with the moving images to tell a cohesive, handcrafted narrative, from simple ballads and poems to complex, sequential stories. The frame and spool mechanisms will be premade for you. The balance of time will be spent on creating your “Story” in a whole new artistic way and then assembling the pieces together to finish. This Crankie Workshop is the perfect opportunity to grow your creativity! Optional Performance: At 7 PM on Saturday, November 29 a Crankie Performance will take place upstairs in the front studio room. The performance will be part of the Open House event, and Crankie Workshop participants will be welcome to try out their newly made Crankies! Please note that workshop participants are not required to perform, it is optional. |
